What an amazing designer!  I have admired Anna Sui for some time and even though I'm not drawn to wear her designs, as a fellow fashion  designer, I am in awe of her process;  her ability to be so prolific, to be so thoughtful and detail oriented and to create a narrative with her designs, even now.  I saw this show at one of my regular haunts when I am in London, the brilliant Fashion and Textile Museum.

Anna studied at Parson’s design school in NYC and from there she branched out to become one of America’s most iconic fashion designers.  Drawing from past fashion trends or genres, she updates them into the modern realm.

Her designs in this exhibit where organizedby trends and/or genre's that she drew from to create the clothing designs.

She puts such an emphases on detail, in each one of her ensembles.  Even if you don't care for the designs, the thought that goes into each one is astonishing and inspiring.

Here is some of that detail:

My favorite part of the show was being able to study her “storyboards."   Designers learn the importance of these boards and how to pull them together as part of their design training.   They serve not only as inspiration to the designer but also as valuable research and visual commentary, much like an artist who writes about their work.

Here are a few of them!

Here's another storyboard with details from it below.

She has a cruelty free make up line.  I love how the packaging design completely reflects who she is as a designer.

Anna is also known as a great collaborator with other designers who are skilled in the areas she is not.  Most successful designer’s collaborator at some point in their careers, but none so openly or appreciatively as Anna.

What a brilliant exhibit!  If you ever find yourself in London, be sure to see what is showing at the Fashion and Textile Museum, they always have informative, innovative and inspiring exhibits.  And, if you live in London, you can attend one of their regular workshops!

Lastly, a shout out to my daughter for taking some of the close up shots of the designs for this post - fab job Juliana!
