Tattoos & Style...how do you rock that look?
It seems like everyone has one these days. Traveling around Asia and Europe this summer I noticed that the number of people who have tattoos has dramatically increased in Europe, but not so much in Asia. From London and Paris to Brussels and New York City, this is what I noticed; not everyone has made great choices when it comes to personal style and the tattoos they are flaunting. And, let's face it, if you have a large tattoo, you want it to be seen. But when people look at you they see your clothing choices AND your tattoo. How do you make it work?
There are two ways to approach this:
You can think of your tattoo as a supporting artist. It's something that enhances your look, like the right piece of jewelry. Go for a smaller tattoo because it will be more in the background and this is especially true if it's in black or grey or generally a darker outline colour. If you really want a larger tattoo, but still want it in that supporting artist role, then black and grey or a muted color palette is best.
Okay, you don't want a small tattoo, you want something big and bold so that it's the main attraction. Now you have to watch your style. Neutrals or single bright colours for clothing are best. They will support and show off your tattoo really well. If you are going to wear stripes, plaids etc., you have to look really hard to make sure they aren't clashing with that tattoo.
What about colour? When choosing your tattoo, you are generally looking at it on a white piece of paper. But remember that the actual colour that will show up on your skin could be different, depending on your skin tone. Depending on how conservative your workplace is, you may need a more discreet placement.
When you choose your tattoo, go for something you really love. Depending on were you have the designed inked it can be painful process and removing it just as much. Choosing something you love, means you'll have a better chance of enjoying for a long time.
